BRUNSWICK, ME - Senior Jamie Love-Nichols (Cortez, C) scored a pair of goals as the Tufts University women's soccer team used two second-half tallies to pull away from Bowdoin in a 3-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at Pickard Field.
The Jumbos (7-4-3, 5-3-2 NESCAC) pick up a key win in the regular season finale and secure a home NESCAC quarterfinal match Saturday against Wesleyan University. Despite the loss, Bowdoin (6-5-3, 2-5-3 NESCAC) gets into the tournament as the eighth seed and will travel to play at Amherst on Saturday for their quarterfinal match.
Love-Nichols broke into the scoring column less than eight minutes into the contest, finishing off a cross through traffic from Alyssa Von Puttkammer (Park City, UT) at 7:55 to give the Jumbos the early advantage. Bowdoin was able to reply before halftime when Becky Stoneman played a set piece to Amanda Kinneston, who headed the ball inside the right post to even the score at 22:53.
The game featured back-and-forth play through most of the second half until a pair of late Tufts scores put the contest out of reach. With 12:54 remaining, Bowdoin netminder Maddie Lane made an initial save on a shot, but Tufts sophomore Sophie Wojtasinski (Duxbury, MA) pounced on the rebound to put the Jumbos ahead. Love-Nichols sealed the victory with 6:35 to go by putting home a loose ball in front to round out the scoring.
Lane stopped six shots for Bowdoin while sophomore Kristin Wright (Austin, TX) made six stops for the Jumbos. In an extremely even game, the teams both took 14 shots, made six saves and each had four corners.
Tufts ended a three-game winless streak with the victory. This is the eighth straight year that the Jumbos have earned a top four finish during the regular-season.
