SOMERVILLE - The Tufts University Jumbos netted two goals in the first half to propel themselves to a 3-1 NESCAC victory over the Connecticut College Camels on Saturday afternoon at Kraft Field. With losses by Williams and Middlebury today, the Jumbos jumped into second place in NESCAC.
Tufts struck early in the first half in the 10th minute after receiving a corner kick. Junior Alyssa Von Puttkammer (Park City, UT) curled it into the box where senior Lauren O'Connor (Dudley, MA) was able to get a foot on it and put it in the back of the net for her third tally of the year.
The Jumbos doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute when first-year Alina Okamoto (Altadena, CA) found senior Alix Michael (Mercer Island, WA) open from about 20 yards out. Michael used her left foot to hook it over the top of Camels first-year keeper Natalie Signor (Glastonbury, CT).
Tufts dominated the first half statistically, out-shooting Connecticut College 17-4. Signor made five saves for the Camels while her counterpart sophomore Kristin Wright (Austin, TX) was only forced to make one stop.
Sophomore Maeve Stewart (Palo Alto, CA) added an insurance tally in the 51st minute for the Jumbos off a feed from senior Jamie Love-Nichols (Cortez, CO). Stewart now has three goals on the season.
Connecticut College tried to make things interesting as they got on the board in the 65th minute. First-year Grace Bilodeau (Harvard, MA) netted her sixth of the season assisted by first-year Astrid Kempainen (Chazy, NY).
The Camels had better pressure overall in the second half, earning seven corner kicks and out-shooting the Jumbos 7-5. Tufts finished with the overall advantage at 22-11. Sophomore Phoebe Hanley (Mamroneck, NY) played the second half in net for Tufts, making two saves. Signor went the distance for the Camels, registering seven saves.
Senior Jill Cote (Portsmouth, RI) and first year Rebecca Parente (Orange, CT) each recorded a pair of shots for Connecticut College while Stewart had six for Tufts.
The Jumbos are now 5-2-2 overall and 4-1-1 in NESCAC play. They will return to non-league action on Tuesday with a game at MIT at 4 pm. Connecticut College drops to 3-5-1 (1-4-1 NECAC) and will host Mount Holyoke on Tuesday at 4:30 pm.
