BOSTON - Senior Amy Wilfert (Westborough, MA), junior Nakeisha Jones (Boston, MA) and senior tri-captain Kanku Kabongo (Abington, MA) all either improved upon or established NCAA women's indoor track & field qualifying marks during competition at Boston University's Valentine Invitational on Friday.
Wilfert's 17:26.88 time in the 5,000 meters on BU's banked track converts to a 17:30.18 qualifying time, which is significantly faster than the 17:40.76 that she posted at Northeastern back in December. She was 19th overall at the BU race, including third among Division III competitors.
In the triple jump, Jones furthered her NCAA qualifying distance and Kabongo joined the qualifying list. Jones hit a 37'7 3/4" (11.47m), six inches better than she landed at BU's Terrier Invitational on January 28. Kabongo was right behind Jones in the BU standings, going 37'2 1/4" (11.33m), a few inches behond the 36'11" (11.25m) provisional qualifying distance. The Jumbo pair placed fifth and sixth out of 32 entries in the event. Kabongo was also seventh out of 41 in the long jump at 16'9 1/4" (5.11m).
The Tufts 4x400 relay came very close to qualifying nationally with their performance at BU. Though their 3:59.11 finish is within the 3:59.50 provisional qualifier, the time will be adjusted due to the banked track. The actual adjustment information was not available, but it is believed that it will put the Tufts time out of contention. Nevertheless, sophomore Alyssa Corrigan (Wellesley, MA), sophomore Sam Bissonnette (Bridgewater, MA), junior Dayorsha Collins (Boston, MA) and first year Jana Hieber (Goffstown, NH) had the 13th best time at BU and were second among Division III foursomes.
Corrigan also ran a 59.23 400 at BU, while sophomore Kaylee Maykranz (Jackson, WY) timed 1:18.22 in the 500 meters.
