HARTFORD - The Tufts women's squash team lost 8-1 to Wesleyan University in the first round of the 2011 NESCAC Championship hosted by Trinity College on Friday night. The Jumbos were the #10 seed and the Cardinals were seventh.
Tufts will play Saturday matches at Wesleyan University as the conference tournament continues. They will play the loser of Friday's #8 Bowdoin and #9 Colby's first-round match on Saturday at 12:15 pm. Wesleyan advances to play two-seed Williams College in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 10:30 am.
Sophomore Jess Rubine (Cranston, RI) was the lone Tufts winner, taking the #4 match dramatically in five games. She was down 2-1 in games before winning the fourth and fifth by identical 11-8 scores.
The Jumbos lost four matches in four games. Junior Alix Michael (Mercer Island, WA) had a hard-fought 11-5, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9 loss in the #1 match. Senior co-captain Valerie Koo (Hong Kong, China) earned a 13-11 win that tied her #2 match 1-1 before Wesleyan's Diana Edwards won out. Jumbo junior tri-captain Mercedes Barba (New York, NY) had a 1-0 lead in the #3 match after an 11-9 first-game win. In the ninth match, sophomore Caitlin Doherty (Topsfield, MA) won the third game by an 11-6 final.
