NORTON - The Tufts University women's swimming & diving team was first to the wall on several occasions at Wheaton College's invitational on Friday and Saturday. Jumbos won seven events during the meet, which was the last before the championship season starts at NESCAC's Feb. 18-20 at Williams.
Tufts' success was spread across the table in the non-scoring Wheaton meet. The 400 freestyle relay of juniors Courtney Adams (Lake Forest, IL), Valerie Eacret (Goleta, CA), Hannah Henderson (Portola Valley, CA) and Saheela Mehrotra (Taipei, Taiwan) timed 3:43.02 to get the first Jumbo victory early in the meet.
Eacret would win the 200 freestyle in 2:00.89, just ahead of sophomore teammate Lizz Grainger (Nashville, TN) at 2:01.20. Adams swam a 25.22 50 freestyle to win that event.
Senior tri-captain Megan Kono (LaGrange, IL) won both individual medleys for the Jumbos. Her 4:44.96 time was first in the 400, and then a 2:15.69 later took the 200. Fellow captain Jen Iassogna (Newtown, CT) earned second in the 1,000 free at a 11:26.78 time.
A newcomer to the victory column, first year Priyanka Bhargava (Woodbridge, CT) finished the 200 backstroke in 2:17.13 to edge classmate Jennifer Konick's (Salem, OR) 2:19.78. No stranger to touching first was sophomore Christine Garvey (West Chester, PA), who had the meet's fastest time in the the 200 butterfly at 2:13.51.
Other individual runner-up efforts over the weekend included first year Ellen Gage's (Storrs, CT) 1:10.82 in the 100 breaststroke, Henderson's 55.66 in the 100 free and first year diver's 393.7 score in one-meter diving.
The Jumbos are now in preparation for the 2011 NESCAC Championships at Williams.
