CLERMONT, Fla. - The Tufts University softball team dropped a pair of National Training Center (NTC) Spring Games played in Clermont, Florida to open their 2011 season on Saturday. The Jumbos fell 6-2 against Plymouth State and 10-2 to St. Thomas in six innings.
In the opening game, Plymouth scored four runs (three unearned) in the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead. Junior CF Allie Luisi and senior 3B Kortney Nedeau both had singles and scored runs in the first inning. Junior 2B Heather Blase hit an RBI single in the second.
The Jumbos scored their first run of '11 in the bottom of the second after junior SS Mira Lieman-Sifry (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) walked and stole second. She eventually scored on a ground out by senior pitcher Izzie Santone (Madison, CT).
A two-run double by Luisi in the fourth put the Panthers ahead 6-1. Tufts would get one back in the bottom of the inning on a double by Lieman-Sifry and a ground-out by first year DH Chrissie Massrey (San Juan Capistrano, CA), but that was it.
Plymouth first year Amber White capped off a complete-game win, allowing just five hits and three walks with two strike outs. Luisi finished 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored. Blase scored two runs for PSU.
Junior 1B Lena Cantone (Southington, CT) was 3 for 4 for Tufts, while Lieman-Sifry scored twice. Santone absorbed the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
In the nightcap, St. Thomas scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to end what had been a close game. A three-run third inning gave the Tommies an early advantage. First year SS Jenna Hoffman and first year catcher Emily Gregory both singled and scored in the inning.
Tufts was held scoreless through four innings by sophomore pitcher Alyssa Dunrud, but the Jumbos scored twice in the fifth. Lieman-Sifry hit a two-run single making it a 3-2 game.
Tufts sophomore Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA) pitched well through four innings until the Tommies put three runners on base without scoring in the fifth. However, in the sixth they sent 10 batters to the plate against DiBiase and first year Lauren Giglio (Niskayuna, NY) and ended the game on the eight-run rule. Senior LF Sydney Marquardt hit a three-run double and Gregory added a two-run double in the inning.
Marquardt finished 2 for 3 with four RBI and a run to lead St. Thomas. Gregory (2 for 3, two runs, two RBI), Hoffman (3 for 3, two runs) and senior 2B Chandran Duffy (3 for 3) led the Tommies' offensive attack. Dunrud allowed six hits and a walk in six innings.
Lieman-Sifry was 2 for 3 with two RBI in the game. DiBiase took the loss, allowing nine hits and five earned runs in 5.2 innings. She struck out five.
