CLERMONT, FL - The Tufts University softball team scored 25 runs on 29 hits in 10 innings of play in two games on Friday at the NTC Spring Tournament. Tufts took wins over Allegheny, 15-1, and Grinnell, 10-2, as both games were stopped after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Tufts trailed early in both contests. Allegheny took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run when CF Sara Doan walked and scored. However, Tufts took the advantage with three runs in the top of the second and piled on from there. They added seven in the third and five more in the fourth.
Senior 1B Lena Cantone (Southington, CT) finished 2 for 5 with 3 rbi and 2 runs scored, including a two-run triple in the fourth. Sophomore 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) was 3 for 3 with 2 rbi, both on a third-inning single. Junior SS Mira Lieman-Sifry (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) had a 3 for 4 game with 3 runs scored and 2 rbi. Eleven players overall scored runs for Tufts.
Senior Izzie Santone (Madison, CT) allowed just two hits and no earned runs for the win. Sophomore Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA) pitched two no-hit innings of relief and struck out the side in the fifth.
Grinnell scored two in the top of the first to take a lead. Sophomore catcher Christina Colver had an rbi single. However, Tufts starter Lauren Giglio (Niskayuna, NY) settled down and did not allow another run in three more innings of work.
After a single run in the first on a double by Cantone, Tufts scored three in the second to take the lead for good. Junior CF Lizzy Iuppa (Paramus, NJ) singled home a run, stole a base and scored in the inning. Senior Kim Miner (Concord, MA) singled home a run in the third, and then Giglio's two-run double keyed a four-run fourth inning that put Tufts up 9-2. The Jumbos ended the game in the fifth when Iuppa singled, stole second and eventually scored on a single by Cantone.
Hitting .513 in Florida, Cantone was 4 for 4 with 3 rbi and a run in the game. Iuppa was 2 for 3 with 3 runs, an rbi and 3 stolen bases. Lieman-Sifry was 2 for 3 with 2 runs and an rbi. Giglio allowed three hits and two runs while striking out six during her pitching victory. Tufts pitching allowed just five hits during the day.
The Jumbos will get their first taste of NESCAC with a non-divisional game against Middlebury tomorrow after they play Wisconsin-Superior for the second time this week earlier in the day.
