MEDFORD - The Tufts University women's outdoor track & field team was out in force on Saturday at the MIT Invitational and showed their scoring power in the region. The non-scoring meet was large in scale and Tufts finished with five victories.
Sophomore Kelly Allen (Norton, MA) won both the discus throw and the hammer throw. Her 134'5" (40.98m) in the discus was in front of second-place teammate Ronke Oyekunle (Harvard, MA) at 116'8" (35.56m). Allen won the hammer at 148'4" (45.22m), and was second to Oyekunle in the shot put. Oyekunle won with a 39'0 1/2" (11.9m) and Allen came in at 38'4 3/4" (11.7m).
Senior Amy Wilfert (Westborough, MA) won the 5,000 meters race by 16 seconds. Her 17:38.31 first-place time was barely three seconds off the 17:35 NCAA provisional time. Senior Kanku Kabongo (Abington, MA) beat the rest of the MIT field in the triple jump with 36'11 3/4" (11.27m) distance.
First year Jana Hieber (Goffstown, NH), the current NESCAC Performer of the Week, was the runner-up in the 400 hurdles (1:06.59). Pole vaulter Heather Theiss (North Woodmere, NY) cleared 10'11 3/4" (3.35m) and was third at the meet.
Kabongo also had the fifth fastest time in the 100 meters at 12.95 seconds. She then ran the lead-off leg for the 4x100 meter relay that included Hieber in the third leg, sophoore Alyssa Corrigan (Wellesley, MA) leading off and sophomore Sam Bissonnette (Bridgewater, MA) finishing. They crossed the finish line in 51.38 seconds.
The Jumbos are scheduled to compete at the Larry Ellis Invitational hosted by Princeton University on Friday, and then their own Tufts Invitational at Dussault Track on Saturday.
