MEDFORD - The Tufts University softball team received two stellar pitching outings to earn a double-header sweep, 6-0 and 4-0, of the Colby College Mules in NESCAC East action on Friday afternoon at Spicer Field. The Jumbo pitching staff allowed just six hits total for the day.
In game one, sophomore starter Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA) allowed only two baserunners through her first four innings of work. The Jumbo offense would be shut down until the bottom of the fourth inning by Colby starter Aimee Polimeno (North Woodstock, NH).
The first four batters reached base for Tufts in that inning, beginning with a single from junior 1B Lena Cantone (Southington, CT). First year C Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) followed with a walk and then sophomore 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) singled home Cantone. First year Kayla Holland (Attleboro, MA) continued the frame with a two-run double to make it 3-0 Jumbos. First year RF Chrissie Massrey (San Juan Capistrano, CA) brought home the final run of the inning with a groundout.
The four runs were plenty for the Jumbos in game one, but they added a pair of insurance tallies in the fifth. After the first two hitters of the inning were retired, three consecutive singles by Cantone, Clair and Beinecke pushed the advantage to 6-0.
DiBiase earned the victory for the Jumbos, to move her record to 4-7. In five innings of work, she gave up two hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Sophomore Aly Moskowitz (Westfield, NJ) went the final two innings, giving up a hit and striking out two.
Polimeno suffered the loss for Colby to drop to 3-4. She pitched five full innings, allowing all six runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Cantone and Beinecke each went 2 for 3 for the Jumbos, while Clair reached base twice with a walk and a single.
Senior Alyssa Lepore (Victor, NY), sophomore CF Lindsay Peterson (Fairfield, CT) and senior C Barbara Santos (Topsfield, MA) each had a single for the Mules.
Game two saw Tufts get the only run they would need in the first inning. Cantone and Clair each singled after two outs were made. Beinecke walked, as did Massrey, which scored Cantone from third base.
Colby's best threat of the afternoon came in the second inning. Lepore led off the inning with a single and then an error on a bunt from first year Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario) put two on base with no outs. Then sophomore starting pitcher Lauren Becker (Falls Church, VA) singled to load the bases.
Jumbo senior starter Izzie Santone (Madison, CT), was able to work out of the jam though, as she struck out the next batter. She was then helped out by a great diving catch on a line drive by junior 3B Katherine Darveau (Reading, MA). After making the stab, Darveau was able to record a double play by beating the runner at third base back to the bag.
Junior Mira Lieman-Sifry (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) made it 2-0 Tufts with a bunt single in the second inning, and then the Jumbos doubled their advantage in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Cantone.
Santone finished the day going five innings, allowing three hits, no walks and she struck out six batters. She now stands at 8-2 on the season. First year Lauren Giglio (Niskayuna, NY) earned the save in relief with two innings pitched and four strikeouts.
Becker was the losing pitcher in game two for the Mules, falling to 4-9 on the year, as she went the full six innings. She surrendered the four runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Junior CF Lizzy Iuppa (Paramus, NJ) reached base twice at the top of the order for the Jumbos in the game with a walk and a bunt single. She also scored a run. Cantone, just like in game one, was 2 for 3, while at the bottom of the order both sophomore Liz Pinzino (Marlboro, MA) and Darveau added singles.
Lepore reached twice for the Mules in game two with a single and walk. Becker tried to help her own cause as she singled twice.
All six of Colby's hits in the two games were singles, as Tufts out-hit the Mules, 16-6.
Tufts moves to 18-14 overall and 6-2 in the NESCAC East, while Colby falls to 7-16 and remain winless in league play at 0-8.
The two teams will play the finale of the series on Saturday morning at 10 am.
