Sophomore Kelly Allen won three New England Div. III titles

CAMBRIDGE - Sophomore Kelly Allen (Norton, MA) of the Tufts women's outdoor track & field team firmly established herself as the best thrower in the region by winning three events at the 2011 New England Division III Championship hosted by MIT.
Allen repeated as New England Div. III discus throw champion with a 147'10" (45.07) mark that was almost nine feet longer than the rest of the field. She also won the shot put at 41'8 3/4" (12.72m) and was first in the hammer throw with a distance of 158'7" (48.34m). Her 30 points helped Tufts total 96 to finish third at the meet.
The Jumbos won four events overall. Senior Amy Wilfert (Westborough, MA) was over five seconds ahead of the field in the 3,000 steeplechase, winning with a 10:54.42 time that is an NCAA provisional qualifier. She's ranked #15 in the event nationally.
First year hurdler Jana Hieber (Goffstown, NH) improved her national provisional mark in the 400 hurdles to 1:02.59, which was second at the meet by less than a half-second. She's currently ranked #14 nationally in the event. Junior Nakeisha Jones (Boston, MA) also improved her provisional mark, going 39'0 1/2" (11.90m) in the triple jump for second place. She's #7 nationally.
Senior tri-captain Kanku Kabongo (Abington, MA) surpassed the NCAA provisional mark in the triple jump with a 37'10" (11.53m) that was fourth at the meet and ranks her 21st nationally. Junior Heather Theiss (North Woodmere, NY) hit the NCAA provisional mark of 11'7 3/4" (3.55m) in the pole vault for fifth at the meet and #18 in the nation.
Kabongo added a second in the long jump at 18'0 1/4" (5.49m) as she scored a total of 13 point at the meet. Junior Ronke Oyekunle (Harvard, MA) was second behind Allen in the shot put with a 41'7" (12.67m) heave. Tufts scored 16 total points in the hammer throw, with Allen in first, sophomore Sabienne Brutus (Brooklyn, NY) in fifth (150'10"/45.98m) and Oyekunle in eighth (139'7"/42.56m).
The Jumbos compete at the All-New England Championships hosted by Southern Connecticut next week (May 12-14).
