JUMBO FIELD HOCKEY DOMINATES BABSON 5-0 FOR FIRST WIN OF 2011 SEASON

Box Score
Among Tufts' five goals was the first collegiate tally by Stephanie Wan

MEDFORD - The Tufts field hockey team did not allow a shot on goal and had five different players in the scoring column as the Jumbos defeated Babson College 5-0 in non-conference play at Bello Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The hosts set the tone early as junior Missy Karp (Berwyn, PA) scored off her own rebound just 53 seconds into the game to put Tufts up 1-0. Another Jumbo flurry 10 minutes later produced a goal by senior co-captain Lindsay Griffith (Wilmington, DE) and the Jumbos led 2-0 at the 24-minute mark, forcing a Babson time-out.

The lone Babson shot attempt of the game was a good one, as first year Caroline Malone (Walpole, MA) hit one just wide of the cage after a penalty corner at the 15-minute mark. However, Tufts would close the half with a third goal as first year midfielder Maggie Chapman (St. Louis, MO) fed the ball into the middle of the circle where junior Chelsea Yogerst (San Diego, CA) fired it home with 3:26 on the clock.

Tufts held a 23-1 advantage in shots after 35 minutes, with Babson starting goalkeeper Jess Pashos (Winchester, MA) making eight saves.

The Jumbos controlled play even better in the second half. Senior co-captain Taylor Dyer (Windham, NH) hit the post after striking an early penalty corner insert, but made amends when she blasted home a corner insert by junior Kayla Murphy (Pawcatuck, CT) at 24:40 of the second half.

Tufts continued to dominate and finished the scoring with the first career goal by sophomore Stephanie Wan (Morgan Hill, CA) at 4:34.

The hosts finished with a 48-1 margin in shot attempts, including a 25-0 tally in the second half. Pashos made 12 saves in the Babson goal, while sophomore Kayla Florence (Milton, MA) entered with 15 minutes remaining and stopped five shots. Jumbo senior Marianna Zak (Concord, MA) notched her 50th career victory without having to make a save. The Jumbos finished ahead 13-2 in corners.

Tufts continues its four-game homestand to open the 2011 season with a NESCAC game against Wesleyan on Saturday at noon. Babson is at Wellesley in NEWMAC action also on Saturday at noon.
