PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Franco Silva (Houston, TX) scored two goals and senior goalkeeper Alan Bernstein (Wayne, NJ) made four saves Wednesday evening as the Tufts University Jumbos defeated Plymouth State University, 3-0, in non-conference men's soccer action at Panther Field.
First year Gus Santos (Framingham, MA) added a goal and an assist for the Jumbos, including the first-half game-winner, as Tufts improved to 1-0-1 on the season. Plymouth State was blanked for the third time this season and dropped to 0-4.
The first half was fairly even, with the Jumbos taking seven shots and the Panthers three. Tufts scored the only goal of the first 45 minutes when Santos and senior Naji Muakassa (Jamesville, NY) broke in alone on the keeper, and Muakassa fed a cross to Santos, who tapped in his first goal of the season.
The Jumbos added more pressure on the Panther defense in the second half, out-shooting the home team 9-2. Santos set up Silva for Tufts' second goal midway through the frame, and Silva added his second of the game with 15 minutes remaining off a nice feed in the box from sophomore Scott Blumenthal (Simsbury, CT)
Tufts finished with a 16-5 advantage in shots and a 6-0 count in corner kicks. Plymouth State keepers Joe Drapeau (Lincoln, NH) and Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden) combined to make three saves.
The Jumbos earn their first win of the season and move 1-0-1 and will return to NESCAC action Saturday at Wesleyan at 2:30 pm. Plymouth State remains winless at 0-4-0 and will open Little East Conference play Saturday at UMass-Dartmouth at 1 pm.
