TUFTS SPLITS PAIR OF MATCHES ON SECOND DAY OF MIT VOLLEYBALL INVITATIONAL

CAMBRIDGE - The Tufts volleyball team took its first loss of the 2011 season in the semi-final round of the MIT Invitational against Springfield College on Saturday afternoon. The Jumbos followed that up with a victory against MIT to finish third in the tournament. Tufts is 9-1 overall.

Jumbo first year Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA) was selected to the All-Tournament team.

Against Springfield, Tufts lost 3-1. Junior Kendall Lord (LaJolla, CA) finished with 35 assists, nine digs and one solo block, along with no errors and two aces on 13 serves.
Senior tri-captain Audrey Kuan (Los Altos, CA) had 10 service attempts with one ace, passed 23 times with no errors and had 15 digs. Senior tri-captain Lexi Nicholas (San Diego, CA) came up huge with consistent serving, attempting 17 with no errors, while also recording four digs in the back row. She added three kills. Senior tri-captain Cara Spieler (Santa Barbara, CA) passed 16 times with no errors and finsihed with 11 digs. First year Kelly Brennan (Burr Ridge, IL) had 14 kills and four errors on 43 attempts, 19 serves with two aces, 14 passing attempts with no errors and eight digs with one block assist. First year Izzy Kuhel (Brisbane, CA) recorded seven kills and three errors on 17 attempts, with one solo block and one block assist, but also several touches to help the defense out. Hopper had 12 kills and one dig in the match, while sophomore Virginia Clay (Santa Clara, CA) posted six digs and 12 passes with no errors while providing great ball control.

In the four-set win over MIT, Lord finished with 42 assists on 98 attempts, 16 serve attempts with two aces, 10 digs and two block assists. Quan served 17 times with one ace and 13 digs, while Nicholas had four kills and two errors in 12 attempts, served 13 times with one ace and had two digs, one solo block and two block assists. Spieler added 10 kills and two errors in 24 attempts, 23 serves with one error and one ace, along with 16 digs. Brennan contributed 10 kills and four errors on 34 attempts, with nine serves and no errors, as well as six digs. Clay had eight serves with one ace and eight digs, junior Kiersten Ellefsen (Goshen, NY) recorded eight kills and no errors on 12 attempts, while Hopper finished with 15 kills and three errors on 32 attempts, while passing seven times with no errors. Junior Natalie Bruck (Ivernbess, IL) made eight digs.

Tufts hosts UMass Boston on Tuesday night at 7 pm.
