MEN'S SOCCER SCORES TWICE IN SECOND HALF TO TAKE 2-0 NON-LEAGUE WIN OVER ENDICOTT

Box Score
Zach Cousens earned the win in goal without having to make a save

SOMERVILLE - The Tufts University Jumbos recorded a pair of second-half goals en route to a 2-0 victory over the Endicott College Gulls in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Kraft Field.

Tufts controlled the action in the first half, out-shooting Endicott 6-1. Freshman goalkeeper Aaron Kanter (Medfield, MA) had to make three saves for the Gulls, including a pair of shots from by Jumbo freshman Gus Santos (Framingham, MA).

In the 15th minute, Santos fired one straight in from the box, but Kanter stuck with it and punched it out. Then Kanter saved Santos' header off a cross from senior Naji Muakassa (Jamesville, NY) three minutes later. Overall, Santos had four shots in the first half.

Tufts also had four corner-kick opportunities in the first 45 minutes, while the Gulls had none.

The Jumbos tallied the only goal they would need in the second half in the 62nd minute. Junior John Lewis (East Greenwich, RI) sent a long lead pass up the right side for freshman Kyle Volpe (Blackstone, MA). Volpe then chipped it over the head of the keeper with it landing just under the crossbar for his first collegiate goal.

Tufts added insurance just four minutes later in the 66th minute when Santos struck the ball off the corner of the post. The ball ricocheted to the left side of the box where freshman Maxime Hoppenot (Princeton, NJ) dove forward to head it home. For Hoppenot, it was second tally of the year.

Jumbo senior keeper Zach Cousens (Contocook, NH) did not have to make a save in 90 minutes of work as the Gulls only had two shots in the game. Endicott's best chance to score came earlier in the second half in the 55th minute when a header from sophomore Alex Elia (Somers, CT) trickled by the left post.

Tufts finished with 14 shots, while Kanter made three stops for the Gulls.

The Jumbos improve to 3-1-1 on the year and will return to NESCAC action on Saturday at 2:30 pm when they play at Amherst. Endicott falls to 0-6-2 and they will have a non-conference match on Thursday at Westfield State starting at 7 pm.
