VISITING UMASS BOSTON COMES FROM BEHIND FOR FIVE-SET VICTORY AGAINST VOLLEYBALL

Senior tri-captain Cara Spieler finished with nine kills and 12 digs

MEDFORD - The 18th ranked UMass Boston volleyball team came back from a 2-1 deficit to earn a five-set victory at Tufts in non-conference play at Cousens Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Junior Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) led the Beacons with 18 kills and added 16 digs, two solo blocks and five block assists.

Tufts had a 2-1 lead after winning the first set 25-16, losing 25-15 in the second set and then taking the third 25-20. The Beacons forced a fifth set with a 25-14 win in the fourth. They got out to leads of 5-1, 8-2 and 12-6 in the fifth, but the Jumbos battled back to make it 13-11 on a kill by first year Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA). However, the Beacons were able to finish it off with a kill by senior Molly Rattigan (Dorcester, MA) for a 15-12 victory.

The Beacons blocked well in the match, finishing with three solos and 16 assists. However, they hurt themselves with 15 service errors. Sophomore Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, CA) finished with 14 kills, 11 digs, three aces, a solo block and three block assists. Junior Kayla Wilson (San Jose, CA) topped the Beacons with 21 digs.

Tufts did not enjoy a good night hitting the ball, finishing at a .091 clip. Hopper had 13 kills and was the only Jumbo in double digits. Senior tri-captain Cara Spieler (Santa Barbara, CA) recorded nine kills to go with 12 digs. Senior tri-captain Audrey Kuan (Los Altos, CA) served three aces and led the Jumbos defensively with 15 digs.

The Jumbos fell to 9-2 after their second loss to a national Top 25 team in the last four days. They were defeated in four by #25 Springfield on Saturday. UMass Boston has won nine straight matches after opening the season with a pair of losses at Hawaii-Hilo.

Tufts has a big weekend of NESCAC play approaching beginning with Friday night's match at Bowdoin. The Beacons play in the Stevens Ducks Invitational in New Jersey this weekend.
