MEDFORD – Freshman Ben Ferris (Essex Junction, VT) connected on all four of his three-point attempts and finished with 17 points as the Tufts University Jumbos earned an 82-70 triumph over Bowdoin College in NESCAC men's basketball action on Friday night at Cousens Gym.
Bowdoin started the contest off hot, jumping out to a seven-point lead, 11-4. The Jumbos trailed 11-9 and then reeled off three consecutive three-pointers. The first two came from Ferris and the third was from senior Alex Goldfarb (New York, NY). Tufts would eventually go up by as many as 10 in the half.
In the first five minutes of the second half, Tufts pushed its lead to 15 at 53-38. Senior Alex Orchowski (Cornwall, NY) scored 10 of the 14 points during the run. Bowdoin clawed back to within six at the 12:27 mark after three straight points by senior Wyatt Littles (Dallas, TX).
Tufts slowly reassumed control of the game and built the lead back up to 13 with 4:40 to go at 74-61. The closest Bowdoin got the rest of the way was eight with 1:29 remaining in the ballgame.
Sophomore Kwame Firempong (Inglewood, CA) finished as the leading scorer for the Jumbos with 20 points on 6 of 9 shooting and a perfect 6 for 6 at the charity stripe. Ferris was 6 of 6 from the field for his 17 points, adding three assists, two steals and a block. Orchowski ended the night with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Bowdoin's Will Hanley was the game's high scorer with 21 points on 8 of 15 shooting. He also grabbed 13 rebounds for a double-double. Ryan O'Connell chipped in with 13 points.
The Jumbos shot 43.3 percent (26/60) from the field while Bowdoin finished at 42.2 percent (27/64). Tufts controlled the boards, 43-33.
Tufts improves to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the NESCAC. The Jumbos will host Colby College Saturday afternoon at 4 pm. The Polar Bears fall to 9-3 and 1-1, and play at Bates Saturday at 4 pm.
