Women's Squash Loses a Pair to Top 20 Teams in Return to Action

Co-captain Mercedes Barba played well against Amherst

AMHERST/NORTHAMPTON - The Tufts University women's squash team suffered two 9-0 losses in their return to action at the Pioneer Valley Invitational on Saturday. The Jumbos lost at Amherst and then against Franklin & Marshall in a match played at Smith College.

In the match against 15th ranked Amherst match, senior co-captain Mercedes Barba (New York, NY) played competitively for the Jumbos. Down 2-0, she won the third game 11-7 before dropping a 14-12 fourth game for the match. Both junior #1 Jessica Rubine (Cranston, RI) and junior #7 Hafsa Chaudhry (Westwood, MA) scored 16 points in their losses.

Junior Caitlin Doherty (Topsfield, MA) lost a very competitive #9 match against Franklin & Marshall. Scores were 11-4, 12-10, 10-12 and 11-4. Senior co-captain Alyse Vinoski (West Hartford, CT) scored 17 points in her three-game loss at #5. Franklin & Marshall is the 17th ranked team nationally.

Now 5-5 overall, 21st-ranked Tufts plays two more matches in the tournament against #32 Haverford and #23 Connecticut College on Sunday.
