Hoppenot's Pair Lifts Tufts Men's Soccer to 3-1 Non-Conference Win Over Suffolk

Box Score
Senior John Lewis assisted two of Tufts' goals versus Suffolk

SOMERVILLE - Sophomore Maxime Hoppenot (Princeton, NJ) netted a pair of goals and added an assist as the Tufts University Jumbos topped the Suffolk University Rams 3-1 in non-conference men's soccer action on a rainy Wednesday evening at Dilboy Stadium.

The Jumbos scored all three goals in the first half to move to a 6-3-1 overall record on the season, as Hoppenot had a hand in all three tallies for Tufts.

In the game's 15th minute, Hoppenot scored his first of two goals as he picked up a loose ball rebound off the foot of junior Scott Blumenthal (Simsbury, CT) for the early 1-0 lead.

Suffolk would even the game at a goal apiece as junior Nick DiCicco (Wethersfield, CT) scored on a scrum in front of the net tallying his first goal of the season as he was set up by freshman Alberto Benhamu (Caracas, Venezuela).

Tufts would regain the lead two minutes later as sophomore Gus Santos (Framingham, MA) put home what would turn out to be the game-winning goal on some nice cross-field passing that was started by senior John Lewis (East Greenwich, RI) and Hoppenot.

Hoppenot would give the Jumbos some insurance in the closing minutes of the first half as he netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season that was started by a corner kick from Lewis.

Lewis had two assists in the contest.

It was a quiet second half offensively for both teams as Tufts held a 9-4 advantage in shots in the period finishing the game with a 22-8 margin.

Freshman Nick Moeser (Albuquerque, NM) needed to make just three saves in the victory for Tufts. Freshman Nicholas Chamma (Rio de Janero, Brazil) stopped 10 shots in a losing effort for the Rams who now drop to a 6-7-1 record on the year.

Tufts will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Williams College for a NESCAC matchup at 1:30 pm. Suffolk will travel to Salve Regina on Monday afternoon in a non-conference match beginning at 3:30 pm.
