WILLIAMSTOWN - The Williams College women's soccer team defeated the Tufts Jumbos today 3-2. After going down early, the Ephs responded with a pair of goals from Abby Morss and a third from Alison Magruder and were able to hold off a late surge from the Jumbos.
With the win, the Ephs, who are currently ranked 22nd in the country after a stellar performance last weekend, stay undefeated in the NESCAC at 7-0-1. The Ephs move to 8-2-1 overall. They remain atop the league standings with two league games left to play. Tufts is now 3-6-3 overall and 1-6-1 in NESCAC.
Tufts got on the board first in just the 13th minute. After forcing a corner, the Jumbos rocketed the ball into the box. Eph goalie Hannah Van Wetter was able to punch the ball out. However, Tufts managed to keep the ball inside, and first-year Allie Weiller (Katonah, NY) finished from the left side into the right corner of the net to give the Jumbos the early 1-0 lead. The goal was the third of the month for Weiller.
The Ephs responded on the shoulders of Morss. With the ball free in the box, Jumbo goalie Kristin Wright (Austin, TX) went down to break up the play. After she lost control of the ball, Morss got a foot on it and finished in the top left corner of the net to tie the game up at 1-1 with 24 minutes to play.
Just under six minutes later, Morss added another goal. Chloe Kuh rocketed a corner into the box from the right side where Hana Tomozawa kept it in play and got a shot off. After her shot was blocked, Tomozawa kept with the play and crossed the ball from the left post to Morss on the opposite side, who was just yards outside the net. She got a foot on it and finished for her fifth goal of the year.
The second half started off very back and forth, but the Ephs started to take control towards the end. With just over 12 to play, Carla Nicasio dished the ball ahead to Maguder on the left side of the field. Magruder carried into the box and kept the ball low as she put it past Wright to give the Ephs the 3-1 lead.
The Jumbos, however, refused to give up and found the back of the net in the 86th minute. After forcing a corner, first-year Nicole Campellone (Princeton Junction, NJ) served the ball into the box where junior Anya Kaufmann (Evergreen, CO) got a body on it and finished to pull within one.
Despite the late surge of momentum, it proved too little too late, and the Ephs walked off the field with the hard-fought victory.
The Ephs outshot the Jumbos by a tally of 17-10. Wright posted four saves for the Jumbos while Phoebe Hanley (Mamoaroneck, NY) added one. Neither Van Wetter nor Laura Wann posted a save for the Ephs.
The Ephs return to Cole tomorrow to take on Endicott. Game time is set for 12 pm. The Jumbos are next in action in a week (Oct. 20) at home against Hamilton.
