MEDFORD - Facing their second national top 25 opponent in as many matches, the Tufts volleyball team lost in three sets against #4 Christopher Newport University on Sunday afternoon.
The Jumbos were playing at home as part of UMass Boston's Beacons Invitational, which they hosted. The Captains managed to hold-off a hungry Tufts squad in all three sets as they earned 25-15, 25-19, and 25-11 victories.
Three Captains finished the match with seven kills, with Baily Jensen leading the trio with a .412 attack percentage. Alyssa Kidd anchored the offense with her 31 assists, while Abby Hogge was a rock in the back court with her 16 digs. CNU improved to 24-2 with the victory.
Sophomore Isabel Kuhel (Brisbane, CA) led the Jumbos (11-9) with seven kills of her own, while classmate Kelly Brennan (Burr Ridge, IL) finished right behind her with six. Senior tri-captain Kendall Lord (LaJolla, CA) totaled 22 assists and first-year Carolina Berger (Fort Lauderdale, FL) finished with 10 digs in the tournament finale for Tufts.
Tufts, which lost to #23 Southwestern University of Texas on Saturday in three, returns to action on Friday night when they play NESCAC-leader Bowdoin in a non-league game at the Hall of Fame Invitational. Christopher Newport welcomes Mary Baldwin College for a USA South conference match on Wednesday.
