BRUNSWICK, ME - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team fended off a furious rally by Tufts to take a 3-2 (25-18, 25-18, 20-25, 19-25, 15-13) victory in a New England Small College Athletic Conference match on Saturday evening.
The Polar Bears improve to 15-2 (6-1 NESCAC) with the win while the Jumbos fall to 10-6 (5-2 NESCAC).
Bowdoin was led by 12 kills from Melissa Haskell, who also added 23 digs. Christy Jewett had 10 kills and nine blocks while Ellie Brennan pitched in 10 kills and seven blocks. Tory Edelman also saw double-digits while 10 kills while Sophia Cornew added 46 assists.
Kelly Brennan (Burr Ridge, IL) had 16 kills and seven digs while Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA) had 16 kills and nine digs for the Jumbos. Tri-captain Kendall Lord (LaJolla, CA) dished out 39 assists and had a team-high 21 digs in the loss.
Bowdoin handily took the first two sets before Tufts grabbed the next two to send the contest to a decisive fifth set. The teams tied at 10-10 and 13-13 before Emese Gaal played a nifty touch down the left sideline to give Bowdoin a 14-13 edge. Edelman sealed the win with a decisive kill for the clinching point.
The Polar Bears will play next at Maine Maritime on Tuesday. Tufts will host Hamilton in a NESCAC match Friday evening.
