NEWARK, NJ - Senior co-captain Scott Anderson (Sudbury, MA) led three Jumbos who scored in double-digits with 18 points as the Tufts men's basketball team won the consolation game of the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic, 74-62, over Brooklyn College at Rutgers-Newark University on Saturday.
Sophomore C.J. Moss (Westport, MA) added 15 points, six assists, and three steals for Tufts. He was 4 for 6 on three-pointers. Classmate Ben Ferris (Essex Junction, VT) had a double-double for the Jumbos with 13 and 12 to go with three assists. Tufts won the battle of the boards 50-31, including 11 by All-Tournament pick Matt Lanchantin (Natick, MA), who also had nine points.
Jeffrey Noel scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Bulldogs. Kavon Baker, who was named to the All-Tournament team, had 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
The Jumbos (1-1) received points from nine different players while building a 36-27 halftime lead in the game. They connected on 5 of 10 three-pointers in the first 20 minutees, all of them made by different players.
Brooklyn (0-2) came out of halftime with an 11-4 run that cut the Jumbo lead to 40-38 with 16:37 on the clock. Tufts was able to hold on to the lead and pushed it to 14 points, 57-43, after a layup by Moss with 8:35 remaining.
Another surge by Brooklyn had them within seven (65-58) following a dunk by Noel with 2:44 left. A pair of free throws by Noel cut the Tufts margin to 66-60 with 1:01 remaining, but the Jumbos were perfect at the free throw line to seal the win. Ferris, Anderson, and junior Oliver Cohen (Penn Valley, PA) were 8 for 8 at the line in the final minute.
Tufts plays at Regis on Tuesday night. Brooklyn faces Old Westbury that night.
