MEDFORD - Junior Jenny Hu (Oakland, CA) won three events and senior tri-captain Christine Garvey (West Chester, PA) was victorious twice as the Tufts women's swimming & diving team scored its first victory of the season, 171-127, on Wednesday night at Hamilton Pool.
Hu captured the 100 breaststroke in a 1:06.14 time, won the 200 breaststroke in 2:26.45, and then completed her trifecta with a 2:12.62 to win the 200 individual medley. Garvey swam 1:59.63 to touch first in the 200 freestyle early in the meet, then added a 5:22.13 win in the 500 freestyle later.
The Jumbos won both relays to start and end the meet. The foursome of senior KJ Kroetch (Lafayette, CA), Hu, first-year Samantha Swinton (Orinda, CA), and sophomore Kathryn Coniglio (Branchburg, NJ) timed 1:51.96 in the 200 medley relay. In the 200 freestyle relay, Coniglio, first-year Shannon McHenry (Yardley, PA), sophomore Scarlett Hao (Lexington, MA), and Swinton timed 1:42.82 to win.
Coniglio added to her two relay victories by taking the 100 freestyle in a time of 55.46 seconds. Swinton and Hao also had individual wins for Tufts, which won 10 of the 16 events overall. Swinton's 2:18.06 won the 200 butterfuly, while Hao had a 26.09 touch in the 50 freestyle.
Dorothy Ren won twice for Wellesley in the 100 backstroke (1:01.06) and 100 butterfly (58.76). The Blue's Gabby Cooper-Vespa was the winner in both diving events. She scored 232.64 off the one-meter board and 225.00 in the three-meter event.
Head coach Nancy Bigelow's Jumbos swim at the MIT Invitational coming up this Friday and Saturday. Wellesley competes at Mount Holyoke College's Pioneer Invitational on Saturday.
