MIDDLETOWN, CT - Playing three matches at the Wesleyan Round Robin tournament on Saturday, the Tufts women's squash team had one win and two losses. In addition to an 8-1 victory against Smith, the Jumbos also had a good showing in a 5-4 loss against #17 Mount Holyoke. Tufts was also defeated by the host Cardinals 8-1.
The Jumbos, who have a 2-4 record overall, are the #24 team in the Dunlop national poll. Wesleyan entered as #18 and Smith was #34.
The lone win against Wesleyan came in the #1 match, where senior co-captain Jessica Rubine (Cranston, RI) won a dramatic five-game contest. She won the first two games before Wesleyan's Grace Zimmerman took the next two. Rubine won the match with a 12-10 final in the fifth.
Jumbo sophomore Paige Dahlman (Denver, CO) also played a five-game match at #2. Wesleyan's Annie Maxwell overcame a 2-1 deficit to win with an 11-8 fifth game. Tufts senior Risa Meyers (New York, NY) won the first game of a four-game loss at #6.
Against Smith, the Jumbos dominated with five of their victories coming in three games. Senior co-captain Hafsa Chaudhry (Westwood, MA) earned the most impressive win with 11-2, 11-0, and 11-2 scores in the fifth match. Meyers was also very efficient, giving up just seven games in her #6 win.
Mount Holyoke won each of the top five matches to defeat the Jumbos. Tufts won the bottom four, including a five-game victory in the sixth match by Meyers. She led 2-1 and then had to earn a 12-10 score in the fifth game for the victory. Sophomore Jamie Maffeo (Brooklyn, NY) won the seventh match in four games for Tufts, losing only the second.
Of the five losses, Jumbo sophomore Ann Bellinger's (Arlington, VA) third match went four games. Randima Ranaweera was a strong winner in the #1 match for Mount Holyoke, losing just eight games.
Tufts finished its first semester of action on Saturday. They play next at Connecticut College on January 19.
