A two-run double by Kris Parr sparked the Jumbos against Elmhurst

CLERMONT, FL – Senior 1B Lena Cantone (Southington, CT) went 5 for 6 with three rbi and two runs scored in a pair of Tufts University softball victories on Tuesday which improved the Jumbos to 7-1 overall on their spring trip. Tufts defeated Frostburg State 7-5 and Elmhurst 4-1.
Cantone helped Tufts take a 6-0 lead after four innings against Frostburg State. She singled home a run, stole a base and scored in the first. She also had a run-scoring single and scored in the fourth. Junior 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) hit a solo home run with one out in the third to help Tufts earn a sizeable advantage.
Frostburg scored twice off Tufts starter Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA) in the fifth on a two-run double by Taylor Vandergrift. The Jumbos added to their lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by first-year RF Bri Keenan (Portsmouth, NH) making it 7-2. The Bobcats rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the potential tying run at the plate before Jumbo junior Aly Moskowitz (Westfield, NJ) retired the final batter on a called third strike.
Cantone was 3 for 4 with two runs and two rbi in the game. Sophomore catcher Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) finished 3 for 4 with an rbi. DiBiase earned the victory, pitching five innings allowing four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and no walks. Caitlin Lovend had three hits and Emilee Ray recorded two with two runs scored for Frostburg.
In the win over Elmhurst, first-year Allyson Fournier (South Windsor, CT) fired a one-hitter and classmate Kris Parr (Austin, TX) smacked a two-run double to lead Tufts.
Fournier and Elmhurst's Lindsay Nauman were tied 0-0 through three innings, but Tufts struck for three in the bottom of the fourth. Doubles by Clair and Parr were at the center of the rally. Tufts added a run in the fifth when sophomore LF Sara Hedtler (Wrentham, MA) singled and advanced to second on an error. Cantone brought her home with a base hit.
With Bluejay runners on second and third with one out in the fourth, Fournier had recorded back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning. A single by Rose Wysocki in that inning would be the only hit that Fournier allowed. The fourth was the only true threat against her until she was a little wild in the seventh. With one out, she hit Julie Devine with a pitch and then threw two wild pitches. Katie Boals hit a sacrifice fly to break up the shutout, but Fournier secured the win with a ground-ball out.
Tufts is off on Wednesday before returning to action with games against Concordia, Wisconsin and Buffalo State on Thursday
