CLERMONT, FL - The Tufts softball team scored 23 runs and had 23 hits in two wins against Concordia, Wisconsin (12-4 in six innings) and Buffalo State (11-8) on Thursday at the National Training Center in Florida. The Jumbos are now 9-1 on their spring-break trip.
Tufts needed their bats in both games. Concordia (4-9) led 4-0 after the first inning, with large thanks to a three-run double by Sheri Weidner. The Jumbos erased that margin with seven runs in the third inning, all but one unearned. An assortment of errors, wild pitches and passed balls, along with an rbi single from first-year 3B Kris Parr (Austin, TX) and a run-scoring groundout by first-year OF Michelle Cooprider (Hopkinton, MA) produced the runs.
First-year Allyson Fournier (South Windsor, CT) came on in relief for Tufts in the first inning and shut the Falcons down. She allowed just three hits and no runs with nine strikeouts and no walks in 5.1 innings of work to earn the win.
Meanwhile, Tufts added to their lead with two in the fifth and three in the sixth. Again the runs were unearned in the fifth, when sophomore Kayla Holland (Attleboro, MA) also had an rbi single. The sixth was highlighted by a two-run double from junior 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) and Holland's rbi double. After Fournier set the Falcons down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Tufts won the game by the eight-run rule.
Beinecke finished 3 for 4 with three runs and two rbi for Tufts. Holland was 2 for 3 with two rbi and a run. Senior CF Lizzy Iuppa went 2 for 4 with a run at the top of the batting order. Jessica Liszka was 2 for 3 with a run in the top spot of the Concordia line-up.
The Jumbos led Buffalo State 5-1 after two innings. Beinecke continued a great day with a two-run single in the first. Sophomore DH Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) had a two-run double in the second. However, the Bengals struck for seven runs in the third to lead 8-5. The rally included a two-run double by Aleesha Williams, another two-run double by Breanna Fenski and a two-run single by Brieanna Brink.
Fournier again came in and put out the fire for Tufts. She finished up with 4.2 innings of two-hit, no-run relief recording nine strikeouts and one walk. The Jumbo bats would continue scoring, adding one in the third, three in the fourth to go ahead and two more in the fifth. Holland and Clair had rbi base hits in the middle of it all.
Clair finished the game 2 for 4 with three rbi. Sophomore Sara Hedtler (Wrentham, MA) was 2 for 5 with two runs in the two-hole. Senior 1B Lena Cantone (Southington, CT) had a 2 for 2 with three runs and an rbi game. Beinecke was 1 for 2 with two runs and two rbi.
Williams finished 2 for 4 with three rbi and a run for Buffalo State (4-4), while Fenski was 2 for 4 with two rbi and a run.
