Tufts Softball Loses Close Game to Ramapo Before Run-Ruling Oneonta on Friday

Box Score
Chrissie Massrey scored three runs for Tufts against Oneonta

CLERMONT, FL - The Tufts softball team split a pair of games at the National Training Center in Florida on Friday, moving to 10-2 overall. The Jumbos lost 3-1 to Ramapo before defeating Oneonta State 12-4 in six innings.

Ramapo's Lauren Shaw and Jumbo junior Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA) engaged in a good pitcher's duel. Shaw would allow eight hits and one run with six strikeouts and two walks in seven innings. DiBiase gave up seven hits and three runs in six innings. Two of the runs came in the first inning on a home run by Danielle Rothenberger, and Ramapo would never trail.

The Jumbos had plenty of base-runners in the game, especially in the later innings, but could not score until the seventh. By that time Ramapo led 3-1. In the fourth, Amanda Kent walked, moved to third on a single and a sac bunt, and scored on a single by Tiffany Fischer.

Tufts had runners on third in the third, fifth and sixth innings, but did not score. They broke up the shutout when senior RF Katherine Darveau (Reading, MA) walked to lead off the seventh and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by junior 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA). The Jumbos had the tying runs on base, but left them stranded.

Beinecke was 2 for 3 as the only Jumbo with multiple hits. Similarly, Fischer was 2 for 3 as the only Roadrunner with multiple hits. Ramapo improved to 10-1 with the victory.

Another two-run home run, this time by Oneonta's Kalyn Deso, had Tufts trailing 3-0 in the first inning of Friday's second game. However, the offense would take care of that, particularly with an eight-run third inning that put Tufts up 10-3. Back-to-back two-run, two-out doubles by senior 1B Lena Cantone (Southington, CT) and sophomore Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) broke the game open.

Tufts starter Lauren Giglio (Niskayuna, NY) settled in, allowing just an unearned run in the sixth after a one-out double by Nicole Brieva. Tufts tacked on a pair of runs int he sixth with run-scoring base hits by sophomore catcher Chrissie Massrey (San Juan Capistrano, CA) and first-year CF Michelle Cooprider (Hopkinton, MA). That put the Tufts lead at 12-3 and the game would be called after six.

Massrey scored three times in the game while going 1 for 3 with two rbi. The Jumbos finished with 11 hits, including three by Clair and two each from Cantone and first-year Gracie Marshall (Palo Alto, CA). Brieva had two hits for Oneonta (3-7).

The Jumbos finish their week in Florida with games against Williams and the University of Chicago on Saturday.
