CLERMONT, FL - The Tufts softball team completed its spring break trip to Florida with an 11-3 record after splitting a pair of games on Saturday. The Jumbos defeated NESCAC rival Williams, 9-4, before wrapping up the week with a 4-1 loss to the University of Chicago.
Jumbo first-year Allyson Fournier (South Windsor, CT) and Williams sophomore Megan Casey were tied 0-0 in a pitcher's duel after three innings. The Jumbos broke through with two in the fourth, sparked by a lead-off single from junior 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA). First-year 3B Kris Parr (Austin, TX) also singled and both scored on a two-run base hit by senior CF Lizzy Iuppa (Paramus, NJ).
The Jumbos extended their lead to 5-0 with a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Sophomore catcher Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) doubled and scored in the fifth, while senior SS Mira Lieman-Sifry (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) and Iuppa both singled and scored in the sixth.
Williams scored twice against Fournier in the sixth. Ally Ensor brought home both with a two-out single. With their lead narrowed to 5-2, the Jumbos added four in the top of the seventh. Iuppa and sophomore LF Sara Hedtler (Wrentham, MA) both singled home runs and scored, and Clair had a two-run single. The Ephs added two more runs in the seventh against reliever Lauren Giglio (Niskayuna, NY), including an rbi double by Kaitlin Dinet, but it wasn't enough.
Tufts pounded out 15 hits in the game, led by Iuppa (3 for 4, three rbi, two runs) and Hedtler (3 for 3, run, rbi). Clair finished 2 for 4 with three rbi and a run, while Beinecke and Parr both had two hits. Fournier improved to 6-0, going six innings allowing four hits and two runs with 11 strikeouts and no walks.
Ansor and Dinet had two hits each for Williams (3-6).
The University of Chicago (9-3) scored three times in the top of the seventh to defeat Tufts 4-1. Maroons junior Kim Cygan and Jumbo junior Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA) were in a 1-1 pitcher's battle into the seventh. Chicago had scored its run in the fifth on a bunt single by junior Jacqueline Ryan, while Tufts tied it in the bottom of the sixth when Iuppa singled, stole second and scored on an error.
Chicago put together four hits with a walk to score three times in the seventh. Raechel Cloud singled home a run and scored and Sarah Neuhaus had an rbi double. Cygan finished off a complete-game four-hitter with a 1-2-3 seventh.
The Maroons out-hit Tufts 10-4. Kaitlyn Carpenter was 2 for 3 with a run and Cloud finished 2 for 4 with a run and an rbi.
The Jumbos begin their New England schedule with a double-header at Springfield College on Wednesday starting at 3:30 pm.
