Sophomore Kayla Holland had four rbis in the first game for the Jumbos

MEDFORD – The 23rd ranked Tufts University softball team continued a perfect start in NESCAC East play with a double-header sweep of Bowdoin College, 9-7 and 12-9, on Saturday afternoon at Spicer Field.
Bowdoin took the initial lead of the day, scoring in the first inning of game one. Junior 1B Gen Barlow (Norwich, CT) walked with two outs and then scored on a double from junior SS Toni Dacampo (Woburn, MA).
The Jumbos quickly answered and grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the first. Senior CF Lizzy Iuppa (Paramus, NJ) walked with one out while senior 1B Lena Cantone (Southington, CT) reached on an error. Sophomore catcher Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) blasted her third home run of the season to give Tufts a 3-1 advantage.
Tufts added two more in the second inning after Iuppa walked again. Cantone followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position and Clair was intentionally walked. Junior 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) singled home Iuppa and Cantone would score on a sacrifice fly by Sophomore DP Kayla Holland (Attleborough, MA). Holland added another RBI in the fourth inning, scoring Beinecke from second with a single.
Trailing 6-1 in the sixth, the Polar Bears rallied to pull within two, plating three runs on three hits. Barlow and Dacampo started the rally with back-to-back singles and then senior 2B Amy Hackett (Bangor, ME) cleaned things up with her first homer of the year.
The Jumbos got three insurance runs back in the bottom of the sixth after the bases were loaded on walks. Beinecke drove in her second run of the game with a single and Holland added two more RBI to her total with a two-run double.
Hackett would not let her Bowdoin club go away quietly in the seventh as she cleared the bases with a three-run double, but it was not enough as the Jumbos held on 9-7.
Sophomore Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA) earned the victory in game one, pitching five innings and allowing a run on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Once again in game two Bowdoin scored first, pushing across two runs in the second frame. Sophomore 3B Hanna Wurgaft (Montclair, NJ) had a run-scoring single and two batters later sophomore pitcher Melissa DellaTorre (Scarborough, ME) had an RBI groundout.
As in game one though, the Jumbos answered back and took the lead for good with five runs on six hits in the home half of the inning. First-year 3B Kris Parr (Austin, TX) and senior SS Mira Lieman-Sifry (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) each had one-out singles. Sophomore LF Sara Hedtler (Wrentham, MA) followed with a two-out single to load the bases. Iuppa singled home the first run and Beinecke emptied the bases with a three-run double. Clair followed with an RBI double of her own.
Tufts followed up with four more in the third inning on a grand slam from Beinecke as she drove in seven runs in the game and nine total for the double-header.
Bowdoin would not go away though, scoring six runs on seven hits in the sixth inning sparked by a two-run home run by Dacampo. Sophomore catcher Casey Correa (Stamford, CT) and Colantuno also added run-scoring hits.
The Jumbos added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run double by Parr and an RBI single from sophomore catcher Chrissie Massrey (San Juan Capistrano, CA).
First-year Allyson Fournier (South Windsor, CT) recorded the final four outs with strikeouts to earn the save for Tufts. Sophomore Lauren Giglio (Niskayuna, NY) improved her record to 2-0 after going 5.2 innings, surrendering eight runs on eight hits. She struck out six and walked two batters.Tufts is now 14-3 on the year and 3-0 to begin NESCAC East play while Bowdoin falls to 12-7 (0-3). The Jumbos return to action on Wednesday with a non-league double-header against Babson at Spicer Field beginning at 3 pm. Bowdoin plays a double-header at Husson on Sunday afternoon starting at 12 pm.
