WATERVILLE, ME - First-year pitcher Allyson Fournier (South Windsor, CT) threw her second perfect game of the season in the opener and then picked up a second victory in relief in the nightcap as Tufts University took 5-0 and 4-3 wins over Colby College in NESCAC East softball Saturday at Crafts Field.
With the wins, the Jumbos clinch one of the NESCAC East Division's two berths into the upcoming conference championship. Tufts needs one more win in the Division to earn the top seed in the East.
Fournier improved to 11-0 this season after striking out 16 batters out of the 21 Colby outs in the first game. In the 11-inning second game, Fournier entered the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied 3-3, runners on second and third and nobody out in the inning. She managed to get a srikeout for the first out and then the Mules lined into a double play to send the game to extra innings.
Fournier had seven more strikeouts over the next four innings. The Jumbos scored in the top of the 11th when Chrissie Massrey (San Juan Capistano, CA) singled to start the inning and was taken out for pinch-runner Katherine Darveau (Reading, MA), who stole second base. Darveau then came around to score on a throwing error.
Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) smacked a two-run homer for Tufts in the fifth inning of the second game, while Colby's Erin Caputo (Sayville, NY) had her first collegiate home run with a two-run shot in the sixth inning.
Clair had an RBI single in the first inning and an RBI double in the third inning of the first game. Lena Cantone (Southington, CT) had an RBI single and added a double.
