SOMERVILLE – Junior Amanda Neveu (Thousand Oaks, CA) gathered a loose ball off a cross from sophomore Alina Okamoto (Altadena, CA) and sent it home to give the Tufts women's soccer team a 1-0 overtime victory against MIT on Wednesday afternoon at Kraft Field.
The game-winning goal came with 5:28 remaining in the first overtime session. Tufts was playing in its home opener.
MIT had the best chance to score in the first half when sophomore Ambika Krishnamachar (Darien, CT) headed a shot off the crossbar. The Engineers out-shot the Jumbos in the first half, 7-5, as Tufts junior keeper Kristin Wright (Austin, TX) made four saves while MIT senior keeper Meghan Wright (Devon, PA) needed to make just one stop.
MIT once again out-shot the Jumbos in the second 45 minutes, 7-4. Wright only had to make one save for Tufts, but the Engineers had plenty of opportunities to score. Senior Emily Kuo (Chicago, IL) had six shots through the first 90 minutes while Krishnamachar had the opportunity in the second half that Wright saved.
Tufts had a pair of shots by first-year Sydney Griffith (Boca Raton, FL) and junior Blair Brady (San Antonio, TX) saved by MIT's Wright during the second stanza.
MIT won the shots battle, 14-11, for the game. MIT's Wright finished with three saves while Tufts' Wright notched five
With the victory, the Jumbos are now 1-1 on the year while MIT falls to 3-2.
The Jumbos are back to NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon at Wesleyan starting at 12 pm. MIT hosts Babson at 4pm in a NEWMAC game on Saturday.
