Karp's Goal Gives Tufts Field Hockey 1-0 NESCAC Win Over Wesleyan Cardinals

Box Score
Sophomore Brianna Keenan recorded a shutout in her first career start

MIDDLETOWN, CT - Tufts posted the game's lone goal with 4:28 remaining in the first half and it stood up as the game-winner as the visiting Jumbos secured a 1-0 decision over NESCAC foe Wesleyan here today.

Senior Missy Karp (Berwyn, PA) broke the scoreless deadlock late in the opening period after taking an initial shot in close that was saved by Wesleyan senior goalie Tori Redding.  The ball stayed in the circle, bounding to the right side and senior Lia Sagerman (LaJolla, CA) sent it right back to Karp for a second chance, and this time she found the net behind Redding for the 1-0 advantage.

Wesleyan had several solid scoring chances in the game, three coming off the stick of senior Taryn Murray, but each time sophomore netminder Brianna Keenan (Greenland, NH) was up for the challenge and made the stop.  Notable were an in-close sweep shot by Murray on the right side during the first half and a high shot from a sharp angle on the right with just six minutes remaining.

Keenan finished the game with five stops.   Redding had seven saves in the Cardinal net as shots favored Tufts slightly, 10-7.

Redding came out of her net to stop a break-away by senior Kelsey Perkins (Barrington, RI) with 7:30 left to keep it a one-goal game. Tufts had much the better of it in penalty corners with eight while Wesleyan had just two.

Wesleyan and Tufts are known for their tight contests over the years.  While the Jumbos own a 28-15 edge in the series, 32 of the last 33 meetings between the teams have been decided by two goals or less.

Tufts returns to action Wednesday visiting non-conference opponent UMass Dartmouth.  Wesleyan is right back on the turf tomorrow hosting NESCAC rival Hamilton.
