Wallis' Victory Highlights Tufts Men's Cross Country's Showing at Purple Valley Classic

Alex Sheltzer was one of the top Tufts finishers in the co-ed 5K race

WILLIAMSTOWN - Tufts junior Ben Wallis (Dover, NH) was the Jumbos' only entrant in the eight-kilometer race at Williams College on Saturday, but he certainly made Tufts' presence known as he ran to an individual victory.

Wallis surged ahead of the 208-man field in the final kilometer to cross the line first in a time of 26:13. His performance shows that he is back to 100-percent health after missing the season-opening race with a calf injury.

In a co-ed five-kilometer race, the Jumbos had several entrants put together solid performances to notch the squad a runner-up finish. UMass Lowell won the meet with 33 points. The Jumbos accumulated 61 points, while host Williams tallied 70 points for third.

First-year Mike Curley (Attleboro, MA) was first across the line for Tufts in a time of 17:01, good enough for sixth in the field of 72. Finishing back-to-back in 13th and 14th respectively were sophomore Alex Sheltzer (St. David's, PA) and first-year James Traester (Amherst, MA). Sheltzer clocked a 17:14 while Traester was six seconds back at 17:20.

Rounding out the scoring five for Tufts were senior Adam Brosh (Agoura Hills, CA) and junior Brandon Wheeler (Scotch Plains, NJ). Brosh recorded a time of 17:29 to place 16th, while Wheeler crossed the line in 19th with a time of 17:32.

The Jumbos assembled some impressive early-season performances on Saturday. They will look to carry the momentum into the coming weeks.

Coach Ethan Barron's team will rest next weekend in preparation for the Open New England Championship at Westfield State on October 7.
