WALTHAM - The Tufts volleyball team lost to Springfield and MIT on the second day of the MIT Invitational Saturday. The Jumbos lost in four to the Pride and in three to the Engineers in matches played at Brandeis.
With a 2-2 performance at the MIT Invitational, Tufts fell to 6-4 overall. They won against Newbury and Smith on Friday night at home. Springfield improved to 11-3 with their win over Tufts, while MIT is now 14-2 overall.
The Jumbos won the first set in a very competitive match against Springfield, 25-18. However, the Pride rallied with three tight set wins by 25-22, 25-22, and 25-23 scores to take the match.
Sophomores Kelly Brennan (Burr Ridge, IL) and Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA) both had 14 kills to lead Tufts offensively. Senior co-captain Kendall Lord (LaJolla, CA) averaged 10 assists per set while adding two aces. She was also one of four Jumbos to finish with 11 digs, and also had three block assists.
MIT had their way against Tufts, winning by 25-14, 25-20, and 25-13 scores. Seven kills by sophomore Isabel Kuhel (Brisbane, CA) led the offense for Tufts. First-year Carolina Berger (Fort Lauderdale, FL) had 12 digs defensively, and sophomore Juliana Goodbar (Berkeley, CA) was in on four blocks.
Tufts is off until hosting Connecticut College in a NESCAC match at Cousens Gym next Friday night at 8 pm.
