Box Score MEDFORD - The Tufts women's soccer team picked up its first point in NESCAC play this season with a 0-0 tie against Bates College after 110 minutes of play on Sunday afternoon at Bello Field.
The Jumbos ended a three-game losing streak with the draw, moving their record to 1-5-2 overall and 0-5-1 in the conference. Bates stopped a two-game slide and is now 1-5-1 and 1-4-1 NESCAC.
The best opportunity of the game for Tufts came 20 minutes into the first half when first-year Allie Weiller (Katonah, NY) tried to beat Bates junior goalie Anabel Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, NJ) low to the right with an open shot, but the ball glanced off the post. The Jumbos allowed just one Bates shot in the first 45 minutes.
Tufts junior Sophia Wojtasinski (Duxbury, MA) had a scoring opportunity 10 minutes into the second half, but her low drive was just wide of the left post.
Bates, to their credit, controlled the momentum late in regulation. The Bobcats had played at at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY on Saturday, but showed no signs of fatigue late in the match against the Jumbos.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in the second half, Jumbo junior goalie Kristin Wright (Austin, TX) had to dive right to make the save of the day on a drive by Bates junior Jaimie Cappucci (Saugus, MA). The rebound went right to the feet of Bobcat sophomore Krista Prouty (Norwell, MA), but she couldn't get good control and tapped a shot that Wright was able to smother.
Weiller for Tufts and Cappucci for Bates had the best scoring bids in the overtime periods, but the game finished 0-0.
Both Wright and Schmelz had seven saves apiece, while Tufts earned a slight 13-10 advantage in shots. Bates had six corner kicks to four by the Jumbos.
Tufts hosts Suffolk on Wednesday at Kraft Field for a 4 pm start. Bates is at Husson that day with a 7 pm start.
