WATERVILLE, ME - Tufts University used a big rebounding advantage and received 13 points and 14 boards from freshman Tom Palleschi (Haverhill, MA) on the way to a 70-63 win over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference men's basketball Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Tufts had a big weekend in Maine, beating Bowdoin College on Friday night as well, moving to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in league play. Colby dropped to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The Jumbos had a 41-28 advantage on the boards and pulled down 17 offensive rebounds, with many leading straight to easy baskets.
Freshman Stephen Haladyna (Hamilton, MA) was 3 for 6 from three-point range and had a team-high 15 points with six rebounds for the Jumbos. Senior Scott Anderson (Sudbury, MA) chipped in with 14 points, six rebounds, and three assists for the winners. Sophomore Ben Ferris (Essex Junction, VT) had 10 points.
Sam Willson (Watertown, CT) led all scorers with 16 points on 6 for 9 shooting for Colby. Chris Hudnut (Chevy Chase, MD) added 11 points and three assists, while Luke Westman (Newton, MA) had nine points and five rebounds.
Colby led by as much as nine points (14-5) about 10 minutes into the first half and still led 19-14 with 6:38 to play until intermission. Tufts, though, started taking control with their rebounding and went on a 14-5 run over the last 4:14 of the half for a 28-24 lead at the break.
With the Jumbos up 36-30 early in the second half, Haladyna nailed a three-point shot with 14:20 to play. Palleschi scored on a three-point play with 13:26 to go and Haladyna followed with two free throws for a 44-30 margin with 12:42 remaining.
Hudnut's three-point shot with 10:03 left brought Colby to eight points at 46-38, but Tufts again took control on the boards and pushed the lead to 70-53 with 1:42 to play. The Mules had a 10-0 run the rest of the way to tighten up the score.
The Jumbos return home for a NESCAC double-header at Cousens next weekend beginning with Friday night's contest versus Wesleyan at 6 pm. Colby is off until next weekend as well, starting a conference double-header on Friday at Trinity.
