MEDFORD - The Tufts men's swimming & diving team had the fastest times in 13 of 14 swimming events as they posted a 163-100 victory against Wheaton College at Hamilton Pool on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Jumbos finish their 2012-13 dual meet season at 4-4.
Freshmen Tyler Lueck (Weymouth, MA), Cam Simko (Summit, NJ), and Michael Winget (Shelburne, VA) were all first to the wall in two events for Tufts. Junior diver Johann Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) also had the top scores in both events.
Tufts started the meet with a 1:39.84 win in the 200 medley relay. The foursome was led off by Brian Marko (Barrington, IL), one of six Jumbo swimmers honored prior to the meet on Seniors Day. He was followed by sophomore Justin Choi (Iowa City, IA), Winget, and junior Austin Wood (Fort Washington, PA).
Lueck swept the distance freestyle events. He won the 1,000 in a 10:27.80 time and was first in the 500 with a 5:07.71 finish. Winget dominated the freestyle sprints, winning the 50 (22.35 seconds) and the 100 (48.80). Simko earned first-place points in the 100 butterfly with a 53.94 touch and later had the best time of 2:01.44 in the 200 individual medley after the Jumbos had stopped accumulating team points due to a comfortable advantage.
Schmidt's winning scores were 375.98 off the one-meter board and 377.55 in three-meter diving.
Junior Drew Berman (Miami, FL) and classmate Kyle Savidge (South Windsor, CT) both had individual wins to add to their roles in the 200 freestyle relay's fastest finish to close the meet. Savidge's 28.93 won the 50 breaststroke and Berman took the 100 backstroke in 57.22 seconds. Wood joined them in the 200 free relay, as did junior Eric Douglas (Southbury, CT), combining for a 1:29.01 time.
Other Jumbo victories came from freshman Anthony DeBenedetto (Hopkinton, MA) in the 200 freestyle (1:48.19), sophomore John Devine (Oxford, MA) in the 50 backstroke (25.82), and freshman Tanner Wiest (Cottonwood Heights, UT) in the 50 butterfly (25.05).
