CLINTON, NY - The Tufts University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win at Hamilton College in a NESCAC game Saturday at Love Field.
Tufts improved to 8-5-0 overall and 5-4-0 in NESCACm currently sixth in the league. The Continentals, who fell to 4-5-3 (1-5-3 NESCAC), can still clinch a berth in the NESCAC playoffs with either a win or tie in Wednesday's regular-season finale at Williams.
The Jumbos were outshot 13-7, but didn't allow a shot on goal until the 73rd minute when Kristin Wright saved a shot by Hamilton's Becca Rees. A Tufts counter attack led to the game's only goal 16 seconds later. Jess Capone sent a pass from the left side to the 18, where Brooke Fortin took it in stride and converted the running shot for her fourth goal of the season.
Wright made four more saves in the final 10 minutes of play. Hamilton's best scoring chances came on free kicks, including an attempt by Lauren Brady that was blocked just before halftime and a try by Hannah Withiam that was just out of reach of a teammate at the far post early in the second half.
Liza Gergenti finished with a pair of saves, including a diving stop of a shot by Capone in the 14th minute that rebounded to Tufts' Victoria Stoj, who shot it into the side of the net.
The Continentals play a 3 pm game at Williams Wednesday. A win or tie would secure the program's fifth consecutive conference playoff appearance and third straight since joining the NESCAC in 2011. Tufts hosts Bowdoin Wednesday to close out the regular season.
