SOMERVILLE - Sophomore Rui Pinheiro (Princeton, NJ) scored his first collegiate goal late in the first half and it stood up for a 1-0 Tufts University men's soccer win over Middlebury in a NESCAC game Saturday afternoon at Kraft Field.
The Jumbos pulled into a tie for second place in the conference with the win, improving to 4-2 in NESCAC and 6-2-1 overall. The Panthers fell to 3-3-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the league.
Pinheiro's goal was the first true scoring chance of the first half. Senior tri-captain Scott Blumenthal started the play with some crafty dribbling down the left side, crossing to sophomore Monil Patel. He found Pinheiro rushing down the field for a one-time finish with five minutes left until halftime.
Middlebury out-shot Tufts 9-4 in the first half, and had two corners to zero for the Jumbos. However, Tufts freshman keeper Scott Greenwood made four saves in the first 45.
The Panthers would finish with a large 19-6 margin in shots, but could not finish. Freshman Adam Glaser was a handful for the Jumbos, putting five shots towards the net. Junior Noah Goss-Woliner had back-to-back shots late in the second half that were both wide. He had six shots overall, but none on net.
Six of Middlebury's 19 shots were on goal, all stopped by Greenwood for the shutout. It was his sixth of the season, Tufts' seventh as a team in nine games. Senior Ben Ewing played well defensively for the Jumbos.
Senior Ethan Collins made one save in the Middlebury goal. The Panthers had a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks.
The Jumbos are off until hosting Connecticut College next Saturday. Middlebury is also idle until next Saturday's game versus Trinity.
