MEDFORD - Despite taking an early one-goal lead, the Tufts women's soccer team dropped a heart-breaking 2-1 decision against visiting conference rival Middlebury. The Panthers scored with just under two minutes remaining in the game on Saturday at Kraft Field.
Senior captain Anya Kaufmann (Evergreen, CO) put Tufts on the board 17:37 into the game when Carla Kruyff (Boca Raton, FL) shot a pass Kaufman was able to tap right past the Middlebury keeper, Elizabeth Foody, for her third goal of the season.
Though the Jumbos challenged Foody throughout the game with some of their best chances coming off corner kicks off the foot of senior Blair Brady (San Antonio, TX), the Panthers were able to keep the Tufts lead at one throughout the first half.
Middlebury got on the board nine minutes into the second half with an unassisted goal from sophomore Hannah Robinson. Her shot hit the far right post before sneaking into the net to tie the game at one goal apiece.
The Jumbos had a chance to take the lead again when first-year Jess Capone (Schenectady, NY) had a break-away chance that got denied with a diving save from the Panthers' keeper.
With 1:35 left in the game Middlebury's corner kick produced the game-winning goal. Sophomore Jaime Soroka soared a kick right in front of the net, and despite the Jumbos' best efforts to clear the ball, junior Sophia Kliger found the back of the net to give the Panthers the 2-1 lead with less than two minutes to play.
Foody finished the game with six saves, while her Jumbo counterpart senior Kristin Wright (Austin, TX) also had six saves.
With the loss the Jumbos move to 4-4-0 and 3-3-0 in NESCAC play. Middlebury is now 6-1-2, 4-1-0 in NESCAC play. Next weekend the #23 Panthers will host Trinity, who sits in first place in the NESCAC standings.
The Jumbos will return to action Tuesday when they travel to Endicott for a 4:00 pm game before returning home to host Connecticut College next Saturday, which is Homecoming Weekend at Tufts.
