Men's Cross Country Runs to Third Place Finish at NESCAC Championship

Freshman Tim Nichols helped the Jumbos to a third place finish

WATERFORD, CONN. - The Men's Cross Country NESCAC Championship was predicted to be a close race, and that it was. The Tufts men finished in third place behind Williams and Middlebury. Senior Andrew Shapero (Laguna Beach, CA) led the Jumbos with an eighth place finish.

All five of the Jumbo men finished in the top 30, with Shapero leading the pack with his eighth place finish.  He crossed the line in 25:06, just over 30 seconds behind Michael Leduc of Conn College who won the event with a time of 24:35.

The Jumbos' 103 overall points put them in third place.  Williams won the championship with 51 points, while Middlebury was close behind with 62 total points.  Bowdoin and Colby rounded out the top five with 114 points and 117 points, respectively.

Shapero's eighth place finished earned him a spot on the All-NESCAC Second Team.  Joining him on the All-NESCAC Second Team was first year Tim Nichols (North Lima, OH) who finished in 13th place with a time of 25:21.

Junior Nicholas Guarnaccia (Reston, VA) finished in 25th place, crossing the line in 25:37.  Just behind him was senior Ben Wallis (Dover, NH) in 26th place, also with a time of 25:37. Rounding out the scoring for the Jumbos was rookie Luke O'Connor (Chicago, IL) whose time of 25:42 was good for 30th place.

Next up for the Jumbos will be the NCAA Regional Championship in Gorham, Maine on November 16.  Their finish in that meet will determine whether or not they will run in the NCAA Championship meet in Hanover, Ind. on November 23.

The Jumbos second seven runners will compete next weekend, November 9, in the ECAC Championship at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I.
