Tufts Softball Takes St. Patrick's Day Game over Local Foe UMass Boston in Florida

Box Score
Kayla Holland hit a bases-loaded triple in the third

CLERMONT, FL - With revelers celebrating St. Patrick's Day in style back home, Greater Boston softball opponents Tufts and UMass Boston marked the occasion by playing a spring trip game in Florida on Sunday with the Jumbos winning 9-2.

Junior catcher Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) clouted her first home run of the season in the first inning, leaving her one shy of the Tufts career mark (32). She went 2 for 3 with two rbi and two runs to lead Tufts offensively. Senior Aly Moskowitz (Westfield, NJ) picked up her second win in as many days, allowing six hits and two runs in 5.1 innings. First-year Erica County (Arlington, MA) finished up with 1.2 innings of one-hit, no-run relief.

Clair's two-run home in the bottom of the first put Tufts up 2-0. It's the 31st of her career, behind only the 32 hit by Lis Drake from 2000-03 and Courtney Bongiolatti from 2002-05. Clair is currently tied with Casey Sullivan (2007-10) at 31.

UMass Boston scored twice in the top of the second to tie the game at 2-2. Sophomore LF Kristina Bove struck a two-run triple with two outs. The Beacons would have baserunners in both the third and fourth innings, but Moskowitz got out of both without giving up runs.

Meanwhile, Tufts took control with four in the third and three in the fourth. Senior 1B Kayla Holland (Attleboro, MA) cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the third and then scored on a sacrifice fly by junior DH Chrissie Massrey (San Juan Capistrano, CA). Senior 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) hit an rbi single and scored a run as Tufts added three more in the fourth.

Junior LF Sara Hedtler (Wrentham, MA) finished 4 for 4 with a run atop the Tufts batting order. The Jumbos banged out 12 hits overall, including a 3 for 4 day by Massrey. Beinecke scored three runs.

Senior 3B Kelsey Souza and senior SS Taryn Asta had two hits in the top two spots of the Beacon line-up. Emily Gray took the pitching loss, allowing the nine runs on 12 hits and three walks with a strikeout.

Tufts (2-1) plays Wisconsin-Stout in a second St. Patrick's Day game at 7:00 pm tonight. UMass Boston (2-2) plays next on Tuesday against SUNY Geneseo and Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
