CLERMONT, FL - Sophomore pitcher Allyson Fournier (South Windsor, CT) pitched a four-hit shutout to lift the #8 Tufts softball team to a 4-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC) on Tuesday.
The shutout was the second this spring against a Wisconsin team for Fournier. She lost a no-hitter with two outs in the seventh inning against Wisconsin-Stout in a 2-0 win on Sunday. Against Eau Claire she struck out eight and walked one. The Blugolds had baserunners in five of seven innings and put three runners in scoring postion, but each time Fournier kept them at bay.
Tufts was led offensively by junior catcher Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT). She hit a two-run double in the bottom of the first ining. Junior LF Sara Hedtler (Wrentham, MA) had led off with a single and senior 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) doubled her to third. Clair wound up scoring on a passed ball for a 3-0 Jumbo advantage right off the bat.
With Fournier cruising along, Tufts didn't have much success against UWEC reliever Zana Lorbetske either. She allowed just four hits and an unearned run in five innings. Jumbo sophomore 3B Bri Keenan (Portsmouth, NH) reached on an error with one out in the sixth, stole second, and scored on a double by sophomore Gracie Marshall (Palo Alto, CA) to put Tufts up 4-0.
Hedtler was the game's only batter to record multiple hits, going 2 for 4 with a run.
Tufts (6-1) plays Macalester later in the day on Tuesday. The loss was the first of the season for Wisconsin-Eau Claire (6-1), who play UMass Boston later in the day.
