CLERMONT, FL - Junior Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) hit a two-run home run in the first inning to become the Tufts softball team's all-time leader during the Jumbos' 6-2 victory over Macalester on Tuesday.
With her third home run in eight games this spring, Clair now has 33 in three seasons to surpass the 32 hit by Lis Drake (2000-03) and Courtney Bongiolatti (2002-05) for Tufts' all-time lead. Clair also holds the single-season record with 16 in 2011.
Also against Macalester, Jumbo senior Aly Moskowitz (Westfield, NJ) improved to 3-0 in the pitcher's circle. She allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, while senior Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA) pitched scoreless relief for the save.
Tufts added a single run in the second to lead 3-0. Sophomore 3B Bri Keenan (Portsmouth, NH) led off with a single, stole second, and ended up scoring on an error. Macalester closed the gap to 3-2 by scoring a pair on a Tufts error in the third. That's all they would get.
The Jumbos had baserunners all game and put two more up in the sixth. Junior LF Sara Hedtler (Wrentham, MA) hit a run-scoring single and also scored during the inning. Sophomore 1B Kris Parr (Austin, TX) led off the Tufts seventh with a single and eventually came across on a passed ball to complete the scoring.
Five Jumbos had two hits in the game. Hedtler and senior 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) were both 2 for 4 with a run and an rbi. Similarly, Keenan and Parr both ended up 2 for 4 with a run. Sophomore shortstop Gracie Marshall (Palo Alto, CA) went 2 for 2.
The Scots also had multiple players with multiple hits. Junior CF Cleo Nagy was 2 for 4, sophomore cathcer Hali Englert went 2 for 3, and sophomore DH Erin Slater finished 2 for 3. Sophomore Brittany Ehmann went the distance pitching, giving up three earned runs.
After four days of double-headers, Tufts is off on Wednesday. They return with Thursday games against Plattsburgh State and Benedictine. Macalester is also off on Wednesday and will play Dubuque and Hope on Thursday.
