Schmidt Places Fifth in NCAA One-Meter Diving for Fifth All-American Honor on Thursday

MEDFORD - Tufts junior diver Johann Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) earned the fourth All-American honor (top eight) of his career by placing fifth in one-meter diving at the 2013 NCAA Div. III Championships on Thursday night.

Schmidt totaled a score of 479 to place fifth. Benjamin Lewis from Denison won the national championship with a 494.65 score.Claremont-Mudd-Scripps sophomore James Stevick was a close second (493) and Kalamazoo sophomore William Guedes took third (491.55)

Schmnidt was first after the preliminary round in the event at the 2013 Championships earlier in the day. He compiled a score of 495.55 points to top the field of 24. Lewis from Denison accumulated a 491.20 score for second place in the trials. Guedes was third with a 479.50 score and Asher Lichtig from Amherst was fourth at 479.40 points.

Making his third NCAA appearance in as many years, Schmidt now owns four All-American awards and one honorable mention All-American honor (places 8-16) for his career. In addition to a first in the NCAA one-meter last season, he placed fifth in three-meter last year. Schdmit was also sixth in three-meter and 12th in one-meter at the 2011 NCAA's. Today's effort marks the second-best national showing of his career.

With the 14 points scored by Schmidt by placing fifth in one-meter, Tufts as a team is 25th at the NCAA meet with two days of competition remaining. Schmidt will compete in the 2013 NCAA three-meter championship on Saturday to finish his season.
