CLERMONT, FL - The Tufts softball team trailed 7-0 early, but scored 10 runs in the third through fifth innings to overcome Benedictine and win 10-7 in a spring break game on Thursday. Senior 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) and junior RF Kayla Holland (Attleboro, MA) had the big hits for the Jumbos.
An rbi double by Eagles first-year catcher Kailee Cable in the first gave them a 1-0 lead. They went off for four runs in the second inning, including a two-run single by first-year DH Melissa Stoch. Cable was at it again in the third, hitting a two-run single that put Benedictine up 7-0.
Tufts started its comeback modestly, scoring in the bottom of the third when sophomore CF Michelle Cooprider (Hopkinton, MA) led off with a double. She scored on Beinecke's sacrifice fly. The Jumbos added three more in the fourth making it 7-4. Cooprider singled home a run and scored in the inning, and Beinecke doubled to left scoring two.
In the Jumbo fifth, Beinecke had an rbi for the third consecutive inning with a single and also scored a run. Holland's bases-loaded double scored three runs and first-year Christina Raso (Burlington, MA) had two rbis on a single later in the inning. With six runs in all, Tufts led 10-7.
Meanwhile, Tufts senior Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA) was quieting the Eagle bats on the other side. After allowing the two runs in the third, she blanked Benedictine in the fourth through seventh innings. In all, DiBiase went 5.1 innings allowing six hits and two runs with five strikeouts while earning the win.
Beinecke finished 2 for 4 with four rbi and a run for Tufts. Holland (3 for 4, three rbis), Raso (2 fo 3, two runs and two rbis), and Cooprider (2 for 4, two runs and an rbi) were the offensive leaders as Tufts out-hit Benedictine 14-9.
Cable was 2 for 3 with three rbis for the Eagles, who also got a 2 for 3 day with two runs from junior CF Kelly Miezala. Sophomore Eryn Pondo took the pitching loss in relief for Benedictine.
The Jumbos enter their second-to-last game day of the week on Friday, when they will face #15 Carthage and NESCAC foe Middlebury. Benedictine finished its week in Florida with a 4-6 record.
