MEDFORD – Sophomore Allyson Fournier (South Windsor, CT) pitched a no-hitter as the #7 Tufts University Jumbos beat the Colby College Mules, 8-0, in six innings in NESCAC East softball action on Friday afternoon at Spicer Field.
Fournier ended the day with 16 strikeouts. The only base runner for the Mules reached on an error in the sixth inning. The no-hitter is the second in a row for Fournier, who pitched one at Endicott on Wednesday. It's her fourth of the season and seventh of her career.
The only run Tufts needed came in the first inning. Junior RF Sara Hedtler (Wrentham, MA) led off the frame with a triple and scored two batters later on junior C Jo Clair's (Glastonbury, CT) ground out.
The big inning for the Jumbos was in the third when they plated five runs on four hits. Sophomore CF Michelle Cooprider (Hopkinton, MA) began the inning with a solo home run, her fifth of the season. The next four batters would reach before a two-run single by first-year 2B Abby Curran (Hamilton, MA). Sophomore DP Steph Tercero (Pasadena, CA) added an rbi single to make it 6-0 Tufts after three innings.
Clair hit a lead-off homer of her own in the fourth inning, the 10th of her season, before the Jumbos walked off with the win in the sixth on sophomore LF Bri Keenan's (Portsmouth, NH) run-scoring single.
Fournier struck out the side in four of the six innings while improving her record to 16-1. She now has 175 strikeouts in 88 innings pitched.
Sophomore Megan Michie (Rhinebeck, NY) took the loss for Colby after two innings. She allowed six runs (five earned) with two strikeouts and one walk. Junior Aimee Polimeno (North Woodstock, NH) pitched 3.1 innings in relief, surrendering two runs and four hits.
Sophomore 1B Kris Parr (Austin, TX), Cooprider, and Tercero each had two hits for Tufts.
Tufts is now 33-3 on the year and 10-0 in NESCAC East play. Colby falls to 11-15 (2-8). The Jumbos and Mules will play a double-header Saturday at Spicer Field beginning at noon.
