MEDFORD - Tufts University pitchers celebrated Seniors Day with shutout performances from Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA) and Aly Moskowitz (Westfield, NJ), as the Jumbos (35-3, 12-0 NESCAC East) defeated Colby College (11-17, 2-10 NESCAC East) 2-0 and 7-0 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division double-header at Spicer Field on Saturday.
DiBiase controlled the first game for Tufts, scattering four hits over seven innings. The Jumbos gave DiBiase all the runs she would need in the fourth inning when leadoff hitter senior Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) singled to left field and advanced to second on a passed ball. Following two fly outs, sophomore Gracie Marshall (Palo Alto, CA) doubled to right to bring in Beinecke.
The Jumbos got on the board again in the sixth with an unearned run as Beinecke again singled to left and was sacrificed to second by sophomore Kris Parr (Asutin, TX). Marshall then drove a line drive to left field that was bobbled and dropped allowing Beinecke to score.
Bienecke was a perfect 3 for 3 in the game with both runs scored. DiBiase raised her record to 6-1.
Junior Kelsey Yardumian (Boxborough, MA) was the hard-luck loser for the Mules, droping her record to 1-1. Meaghan Lewia (Wells, ME) had two of Colby's four hits.
In the second game, Tufts wasted little time, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning off Aimee Polimeno. Sophomore Michelle Cooprider (Hopkinton, MA) singled to center. Junior Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) then doubled to right-center to score Cooprider. Beinecke followed that with a home run to left to give the Jumbos a 3-0 lead.
Colby threatened in the bottom of the second loading the bases on a leadoff single by Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, ONT), then consecutive two-out singles by first-year Tori Sansone (Glen Gardner, NJ) and senior Lindsay Peterson (Fairfield, CT). Sophomore Carolyn Bennett gounded to Moskowitz to end the inning.
Tufts loaded the bases in the third, but failed to score. The Jumbos then broke open the game in the fourth inning, scoring four unearned runs. First-years Abby Curran (Hamilton, MA) and Christina Raso (Brulington, MA) opened the inning with singles. Junior Sara Hedtler (Wrentham, MA) hit a nubber down the thrid base line. The Mules' third baseman fielded the ball cleanly, but the shortstop was unable to handle the throw while covering third and the ball went down the left field line allowing both Curran and Raso to score, while Hedtler ended up on second after the two-base error. After a flyout, Clair singled to drive in Hedtler and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Beinecke then singled to center and the ball got by the centerfielder allowing Hedtler to score. Colby brought Yardumian in for relief and she earned the final two outs of the inning.
Moskowitz upped her record to 9-1 on the season. Beinecke celebrated her Senior Day in style going 6 for 6 with three runs scored and three RBI.
Tufts will host the NESCAC Championship Tournament beginning Friday.
