WELLESLEY - Sophomore pinch hitter Kris Parr (Austin, TX) singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth, and then the Tufts defense cut down the potential tying run at the plate in the bottom of the inning as the Jumbo softball team defeated Eastern Connecticut 5-4 on Sunday to complete a two-win day.
Tufts also had a 6-2 victory against Wellesley, which hosted the triple-header. With the wins, the sixth-ranked Jumbos are now 22-2 overall. Wellelsey, which defeated Eastern Connecticut 4-3 in the third game, is now 15-7. Eastern fell to 13-7.
In the Eastern Connecticut game, Tufts needed a run with two outs in the top of the seventh to send it to extras. With two down, senior 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) singled and scored on a double by junior 1B Kayla Holland (Attleborough, MA) tying the game at 4-4. Sophomore Allyson Fournier (South Windsor, CT), on in relief, set the Warriors down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh.
Into the eighth with first-year Christina Raso (Burlington, MA) on second due to the tie-breaker rule, junior RF Chrissie Massrey (San Juan Capistrano, CA) sacrificed her to second. After a pop up for the second out, Parr singled to center scoring Raso for a 5-4 Jumbo advantage.
In the bottom of the eighth, with junior CF Mattie Brett on third base for Eastern after a sacrifice, Beinecke fielded a ground ball at second and fired home to catcher Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) to get Brett for the second out. A fly ball to center ended it.
Eastern's junior RF Megan Godwin had worked a bases loaded walk in a two-run first for the Warriors, and then hit a two-run home run in the fifth as the Warriors led 4-3. For Tufts, sophomore SS Bri Keenan (Portsmouth, NH) doubled and scored in the third, Holland homered leading off the fourth, and sophomore CF Michelle Cooprider (Hopkinton, MA) had a bunt single and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.
Fournier earned the victory, her 10th. She allowed one hit in three innings. Tufts had 11 hits in the game, including three by Clair.
Sophomore reliever Shannon Martin was the losing pitcher for Eastern, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned) in 3.1 innings of work. Senior 3B Arielle Cooper had three of their seven hits.
Earlier in the day, Tufts senior Aly Moskowitz (Westfield, NJ) improved to 6-0 in the pitching circle, going the distance allowing six hits and two runs. The Jumbos led 6-0 through five and a half innings. Beinecke singled home a run in the first, first-year DH Abby Curran (Hamilton, MA) had an rbi single in the second, and Clair brought home two with a double in the fourth. Beinecke doubled with two outs in the sixth and scored on a single by Holland.
Moskowitz lost the shutout bid in the sixth. After hitting the lead-off batter, she gave up a pair of singles including an rbi base hit to sophomore 3B Mariah Philips. The second run would score on a fielder's choice.
The Jumbos had 13 hits against Wellesley senior pitcher Lauren Goldfarb. Beinecke finished 2 for 3 with two rbis and a run. Clair went 2 for 4 with two rbis and a run. Holland, Curran and junior LF Sara Hedtler (Wrentham, MA) all had two hits and Cooprider scored twice.
First-year RF Carly Bresee was 2 for 4 at the top of the Wellesley order. Philips finished 2 for 3. Goldfarb allowed six runs (four earned) in seven innings.
