MEDFORD - Junior tri-captain Maxime Hoppenot (Princeton, NJ) and freshman Nathan Majumder (Williamstown, MA) both scored two goals to lead an offensive barrage by the Tufts men's soccer team against Suffolk on Wednesday, 7-0.
The seven goals were the most by a Tufts team since a 7-4 victory at home against Lasell on October 18, 2000. Tufts, playing in their home opener today, received points from eight different players. The Jumbos (2-0) outshot Suffolk (0-4) by a 31-2 tally and took 12 corners to zero for the Rams.
Junior tri-captain Scott Blumenthal (Simsbury, CT), sophomore Jason Kayne (Deerfield, IL) and Hoppenot twice scored to give the Jumbos a 4-0 advantage at halftime. Shots were 15-0 Tufts through the first 45 minutes.
On a hot and humid day, and with a comfortable lead, Jumbo head coach Josh Shapiro substituted generously at halftime. The production didn't stop, as goals by sophomore Tal Smith (New Orleans, LA) and Majumder twice brought Tufts to their seven total.
In addition to Hoppenot and Majumder, Kayne (goal, assist), Smith (goal, assist), and junior Gus Santos (Framingham, MA) with two assists also had multi-point games for Tufts.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nicholas Chamma (Rio de Janero, Brazil) was strong in goal for the Rams or Tufts could have reached double-digits. He made 11 saves. The Jumbos also hit posts and the crossbar a few times.
Freshman Scott Greenwood (Weymouth, MA) started in goal for Tufts and did not need to make a save to record the win. He scored the shutout with senior Nick Woolf (Winchester, MA), who entered at halftime for his first career appearance. He made a save on Suffolk's only shot on goal by Alberto Benhamu.
The Jumbos remain home to face Colby College in NESCAC action on Saturday at 3 pm. The Rams host St. Joseph's (ME) in a GNAC game under the lights on Saturday night at 7 pm.
